Barcelona - Barri Gótic - the old town!
The Barri Gótic, the old town of Barcelona, where
you feel like travelled back in time to the Middle Ages. Sunlight
rarely scrapes through into the narrow lanes. During the GoldenAge
of Barcelona, aristocrats built their palaces there. Not very welcoming
from the outside but once opened the gates there are inner courts
of idyllic beauty to be found. Quietly trickling fountains, flower
entwined banks invite you to take a seat and rest for a while. The
old part of the town is the ideal location for a comfortable stroll.
The narrow lanes always lead to small plazas, where you will see
typical balconies with fluttering laundry hanging from house to
house, and old romantic lanterns illuminated in the evening.
If you continue to linger you will arrive at the centre of the gothic
quarter, the “Barrí Gňtic”, where two antique cylindrical towers
of the city wall remain in good condition. A cathedral from the
14th and 15th Century is to be admired here as well, and close by
stands a restored building complex, which covers three medieval
palaces.
