Rome city guide - Rome activities - Rome nightlife

Tourists love to go out in Rome. Although the Roman nightlife is not necessarily very trendy, and the city has not a very modern nightlife scene, tourists usually quickly discover the good places to have fun. The Romans tend to go out late, and with the right atmosphere, can party till dawn. The places to see are the wine restaurants and Cafes between the Campo dei Fiori, Piazza Navona and Via della Pace. Especially Irish Pubs in Rome enjoyed increasing popularity in the past ten years. The largest concentration of night clubs is in the Testaccio district, where travelers can go out for drinks and dancing in a number of bars and clubs just next to each other. The gay scene is very lively and provides plenty of gay night clubs and events. You can find more information weekly about the nightlife in Rome in the nightlife guide Roma C (Internet: www.romace.it) and the Roman city guide, Time Out Rome with an up to date events calendar.

The legal minimum age for the consumption of alcoholic drinks in Italy. is 16 years, and there are no legally regulated closing times for bars in Italy. Everybody above the age of 16 can go for a drink anytime of the day and night. Most wine bars, restaurants and Pubs are open until midnight in the Winter season and close around 2 am in the summer time. Perhaps hard to understand for an English tourist, drinking in Italy is of subordinate importance, because the one thing that really counts for an successful Italian night out is “seeing and being seen”.

The prices for drinks vary a lot. A glass of wine in the Vineria at Campo dei Fiori costs about 1.60 to 5.20 €, in a night club that can go up to 11 € for a cocktail. A pint of freshly tapped beer is hard to get below 5, if you are lucky 4 €. Tourists should realize that drinks are often twice as expensive in bars then in Irish pubs.

The Romans are inclined not to bother too much dressing up when going out compared to Italians in Milan and Florence. However women dress up madly before they go out.
