Lisbon City Guide
Lisbon City Guide: Hotels - Tourist Attractions - Vacations
Lisbon provides tourists with a very well established public transport network however
visitors prefer sometimes to explore the city on foot. In fact the city’s means of public transport,
trams, ferries, buses and cable cars are part of all the tourist attractions and one of the reasons
travelers decide to visit this city for their vacations.
A good starting point for a city tour is the Sao Jorge Castelo, which grants a
panorama view over the whole city. Underneath the protective wall the old part of
town (Alfama) with its labyrinth of little narrow lanes, tourists like to get lost
in between the many restaurants and shady little bars.
West of the historic center lies the Praa DO Comercio, the most impressive and biggest
plaza of the city, which is planed to be converted into a pedestrian precinct.
On plaza Praa DO Comercio borders Baixa, a chessboard-like put on quarter,
on which a another attractive plaza borders, the Rossio.
On the other side of the Praa DO Comercio lies the Rio Tejo,
the life vein of the city, without the Rio Tejo the city would have
never reached its glory. Today boats for tourists travel along the Rio Tejo
and passing by the areas Belm and Parque and Naes. The Belm is situated along
the western outskirts of the city which illustrates the heart of the old Portuguese
empire and accommodates a range of tourist attractions such as the Torre de Belm,
the Mosteiro DOS Jernimos and the Centro Cultural de Belm. The Parque and the Naes
situated on the eastern outskirts of the city center demonstrate the exact opposite
to the old Belm, because it is an very modern amusement location. Here is also the
largest Oceanarium of Europe, an enormous shopping center, cafes and bars along the
river and nightlife venues such as concert halls.
Outside of the city boundaries lie the neighbouring bathing resorts
of Lisbon, Estoril and Cascais. These resorts are very popular in
the summer months by locals and tourists in particular because of
their beautiful beaches. The pretty mountain village Sintra is a
popular tourist attraction for day trips from Lisbon and visited
by tourists throughout the whole year.
