Piazza Navona

Rome Tourist Attractions - Piazza Navona

Piazza Navona is totally surrounded by cafés and restaurants and lies in the heart of the historical center. Their oval form corresponds the arena built by the Emperor Domitian in the year 86. During the Renaissance it was flooded, so that ship battles could be played. Its present shape received the Piazza Navona in the mid 17th Century, when Pope Innozenz X assigned the architect Borromini to built the church SantAgnese. Before Bernini established the church the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (four-current fountain) was designed. The Fountain is decorated with amazing sculptures, which emblematize the four large rivers of the earth: Nile, Donau, Ganges and Rio della Plate.
