The Pantheon is one of the best conserved and most beautiful antique monument of Rome. Besides the Colosseo, the Pantheon is the monument that most accurately symbolizes Rome. Emperor Hadrian established the round building as a temple for the Gods between the years 119 and 128. In the year 608 it was converted to a church the that is also the key to its wondrous preservation. The radius of the dome corresponds exactly its height. Light and rain penetrate into the building by a nine meters large opening named Oculus in the center of the dome. The Pantheon once decorated by God monuments, today however concentrates the attention to Raphaels tomb. The large brass doors, which belonged to the original building from the Roman times are most amazingly designed.
