Forum Romanum

Rome Tourist Attractions - Forum Romanum

Today the Forum Romanum is a heap of rubble/ruins from marble fragments, columns and remainders of foundations. Tourists use their imagination in order to be able to visualize the former market place, which during the antique Rome ages has been the symbolic political, economical and social center of the Roman empire. The Roman empire expanded until Greece, Sicily and Karthago. Fires, barbarians and looting construction workers during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance contributed to that ramshackle condition of today’s Forum Romanum. Only with archeological excavation and restoration work in the 19th Century could the Forum Romanum be opened again for tourists visiting the city. Tourists gain a good overview of the Forum Romanum dimensions when standing on the top of the Piazza del Campidoglio, or even closer from the Via Sacra passing through the Forum. Part of the best conserved monuments in the Forum Romanum is Triumph Arch of Septimius Severus from the year 203 - which was established thanks to the victory over the Parther. Tourists can view the relics of Ceasar’s lectern from which his epic speeches were held before going into battle. Likewise impressing is the former Atrium in the house of Vestas and the neighboring Vesta temple, a round building, in which the Vesta virgins keep the eternal flame alive.
