Fontana di Trevi (Trevi Fountain)

Rome Tourist Attractions - Fontana di Trevi

Fontana di Trevi (Trevi Fountain), lies next to Via del Tritone and is surrounded by a labyrinth of narrow roads. Numerous legends made the Fountain famous. One says that a virgin came along drunk from a three way (trevi) well and subsequently built the fountain. The Trevi Fountain’s actual popularity is thanks to Anita Ekberg with the famous scene from Fellinis film La Dolce Vita (1959). According to a myth a coin thrown in this fountain will secure the return to Rome. The extravagant baroque fountain was designed by Nicol Salvi on behalf of Pope Clemens XII built in the year 1762. The statues represent wealth, Agrippa, health, which displays the holy virgin as well as Neptun, who steer the car pulled by the sea horse. All sculptures depict a group of figures in a Melodrama with a Renaissance palace in the background as well as fissured rock in the foreground.
