Amsterdam Tourism - Vacations
Amsterdam Tourism - Vacations - Tourist Attractions!
Amsterdam is the tourism capital of north Holland. After the legend,
Amsterdam was created by two Fishermen and a seasick dog. Allegedly
the dog jumped of the boat, in order to empty his stomach, and the
two Fishermen went ashore and created Amsterdam. The history of
the city actually began however in the 13th Century, when the river
Amstel was dammed and as a result of this a colony arose and quickly
developed into a major travel city. At first the city was given
the name Aemstelledamme which then later turned into the today's
Amsterdam. Which version you are more likely to believe is really
up to you, but Amsterdam clearly has become one of the most popular
tourist cities in Europe and Mecca for tourists, who want to explore
the rich history of the city. The countless tourist attractions
and the city's popularity for an excessive nightlife attract travelers
from all over the world seeking to spend their vacations in Amsterdam.
Significant in Amsterdam's history has always been the near by seaside.
The city's proximity to the North Sea is of central importance,
and the net of channels, which divide the city clearly into quarters
and gave the Noord Holland's tourist capital the name "Venice of
the North". The center in fact has a small town atmosphere and can
easily be explored on food. In Amsterdam there seems to be a channel
behind each house or apartment, not surprising since the city has
165 channels altogether. Amsterdam's tangle of water routes these
is used by a high number of transports, tour boats with glass roof,
Pedalos, sporty motorboats and enormous ships. This makes it very
clear which important role the channels played every since and play
these days for the city's commercial life.
If you believe the local tourist authority in Amsterdam, then the
city has the highest density of museums worldwide. Tourists often
feel this city like one large museum. Being so touristy, yet even
in the very center of Noord Holland's capital you will find normal
people living their life's in their traditional houses just next
to the channels, exactly like their ancestors centuries ago.
In 2002 it has been 400 years since the establishment of the Dutch
Eastern India company trading organization, that turned Noord Holland's
vacation capital into a rich metropolis. Thanks to the Dutch Eastern,
Netherlands empire was spread around the planet. Trade and transportation
industries are still key elements of Holland's commercial nature,
and besides the tourist boats one sees numerous container ships
and very well developed industrial infrastructure around the whole
country.
Amsterdam still makes the grade for being an exciting and tolerant
seaport. This laissez-faire attitude did not only lead to the nascence
of the notorious red light district and the legendary Coffee shops,
but forms also an important component of the relaxed atmosphere
of the city. Disadvantages of this liberality are however a large
drug problem as well as a rising number of homeless people.
Although the capital of Noord Holland has no real low and high season
many tourists choose to visit Amsterdam and the Netherlands during
the summer time. In the summer all subpopulations of Amsterdam meet
in the Vondelpark, in order to relax and do sunbathing, having a
chat with friends and travel mates, making plans for the nightlife,
sightseeing, city tour or the next shopping trip. Only from July
to the end of august there is really warm weather in Holland. Holland's
tourist magnet is one of the rainiest capitals in Europe but as
quick as the rain comes it goes. Whenever the sun shines the whole
city swarms the numerous streets cafés, tourists hope on a boat
trip on a channel bicycle tour. The winters are rather cold and
often very rainy so do make sure you pack in an umbrella and appropriate
clothes when traveling there. However one clearly has to say that
bad weather has so far not prevented any of the millions of tourists
every year who decided to spend their vacations in Amsterdam.
