Berlin city guide
Berlin is the symbol of a reunited Germany and is named as one of the greatest cities in Europe. After the Second World War Berlin was divided by force between the east and the west by the wall. In addition to that Berlin lost its status of being the Capital city of Germany, instead Bonn was chosen as the new capital. But the end of the cold war and the historical events from November 1989, when the citizens of Berlin demolished the wall themselves is what makes that city so unique and interesting for tourists. The 50-year restrictions appears today like a far memory, and everybody is looking towards the future.
Since reunification in 89 Berlin has been undertaking a serious reconstruction of the inner city centre. During the largest building projects in Germany and Europe since the Second World War Berlin was overwhelmed by building cranes and construction sites all over the city centre. After 5 years of constant redesign and building work Berlin has rose once again from its ashes and is now more attractive then ever to visit. Berlin is now a true hot spot for tourism in Germany, Europe and worldwide. The most expensive project was the rebuilding of the Potsdamer plaza and the Reichstag. The British architect lord Foster equipped the German parliament building with an impressive glass dome, which is meant to symbolize the new transparency of politics in Germany. It stands for a nation, that did not free itself in order to hide again behind fear and regrets of their past.
