Palace of Westminster
London Tourist Attractions: Palace of Westminster
In the Palace of Westminster
are the Houses of Parliament, of which the Big Ben
is naturally one of the most famous landmarks of the city. In fact
the Big Ben is not, as many tourists believe, the tower
rising above the Thames, but only enormous bell of the
St Stephen bell tower, whose sound is unmistakable. The
oldest part of the building is the 900 years old Westminster
Hall. After the palace had been destroyed almost completely
by a fire, the remainder was rebuilt in the 19th Century after drafts
of Charles Barry in the neo-gothic style. Free tourist
tours through the palace including attractions such as the Royal
Robing Rooms, the House of Lords and the House
of Commons, must be booked in advance with the Parliament Education
Unit (Tel: (020) 72 19 46 00). In order to be able to participate
as tourist in a session of parliament, one must join one of the
queues before the Palace of Westminster.
(October to July).
