Tate Modern
London Tourism: Modern Art Gallery - Tate Modern London
Tate Modern, the Tate Gallery
of Modern Art was opened in 2000. This 130 million Pound expensive
project is a successful example for modern urban redevelopment,
whereby an unused power station at the south bank of the Thames
was converted into an avant-garde temple of art in the twentieth
century.
The permanent exhibition holds a majority of the modern art collection
of the original Tate Gallery and is not chronological,
but arranged according to topics; some of the most important art
pieces are of Matisse, Picasso, Rothko
and Warhol as well as contemporary art pieces. The Bankside
has become one of the most exciting attractions of London.
The renewed 14 million Pound expensive Millennium Bridge
of London has been point-to-point connection over the Thames for
over a hundred years. The Millennium Bridge was designed by Lord
Foster and enables pedestrians to walk from the St Pauls Cathedral
to the Tate Modern within minutes. However the bold, filigree
construction was troubled by technical problems since the opening
in spring 2000 and was therefore closed until further notice.
The architecture of the arts centre building, a former power station,
is just as overwhelming for many tourists as the art issued inside
the museum. London possesses also a plentitude of beautiful parks,
which offer resort to anyone who is trying to escape the hectic
speed of London for a little while. In addition to the London parks,
the Thames develops more and more into a local getaway
for tourists as much as for the locals.
