London Tourist Attractions
London Tourism: Tourist Attractions - Sightseeing
Despite
London’s immense size the most important tourist
attractions are located closely together along the northern
Thames bank. The tourist centre lies around Westminster, where the
Houses of Parliament (the base of the British government)
are based. Close by lies Westminster Abbey, were the most
famous poets of the country are buried.
On the other side of the Thames bank one receives a most
impressive view from the top of the British Airways London Eye.
From there the tourist will enjoy an eye-catching view over the city
skyline, ideally for visitors, who are in London for the first time
and would like to familiarise themselves with the enormous dimensions
of the city.
West of the parliament building lies the London residence of the British
King’s House. The Buckingham Palace is the centre of attraction
in London and a must for all tourists that are fascinated by the British
Monarchy and their splendour.
If one heads from Westminster towards the east, one meets the West
End with its famous and lively nightlife. Leicester Square
is usually full of tourists throughout the year but also used as a
popular meeting place for many of the foreign students and workers
who don’t know London very well yet. Most of the “true” Londoners
would never visit this place.
Only a couple of minutes away from the tourist crowded Leicester
Square and Covent Garden there is the newly designed
British Museum, one of the most outstanding museum of the
world. The British Museum holds a majority of the booty of
the once powerful British Empire. At the southern Thames
bank lies an impressive cultural symbol, the Tate Modern.
The architecture of the arts centre building, a former power station,
is just as overwhelming for many tourists as the art displayed inside
the museum. London also possesses a plentitude of beautiful parks,
which offer respite to anyone who is trying to escape the hectic speed
of London for a little while. In addition to the London parks, the
Thames develops more and more into a local getaway for tourists
as much as for the locals.
