The art collections of the Belvedere Art Gallery provide the tourist with a general conspectus of Austrian art from the Middle Ages up to the 20th Century. The upper Belvedere was built from 1721 to 1723 for prince Eugen von Savoyen and offers a wonderful view over the in between lying gardens to the lower Belvedere and the city lying behind. In the lower Belvedere the visitor will be amazed by the medieval art work exhibitions of the baroque, while the upper Belvedere on three floors houses the most diverse more modern style art. In the ground floor one can visit art work from the time after 1918, whereas in the 2nd Floor the tourist will find paintings of the romance and the Biedermeier epoch, as well as classical art of the 19th Century. On the first floor the one finds the true visitor magnet, paintings of the Viennese fin de sicle painters such as Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka and also Gustav Klimt, its famous painting The Kiss is likewise part of the Belvedere Art Gallery.
