Although the main tourist attractions Vienna’s
lie in the 1st District of the city, there is quite a bit to visit
other districts of central Vienna. In Leopoldstadt,
the 2nd District on the eastern side of the Donau river, you will
find the Vienna Prater, an enormous parking lot with a
market and the world-famous historical Ferris wheel. In Landstraße,
the 3rd District, lies the Schwarzenberg palace and the
concert hall. The most well-known tourist attractions however in
this district is the Belvedere, a palace
and park. The small Wieden in 4th District is just as elegant as
the 1st District. The area around the Stephans cathedral
is the liveliest as well as the Karlsplatz (Karlsplatz
= central plaza of the city) which was named after the Karls church.
Margareten, in the 5th District is rather a residential
area, here you can visit the houses of the composers Gluck
and Schubert.
In Mariahilf, the 6th District of Vienna, lies the most
lively shopping street of the city, the Mariahilfer Straße.
On Saturday’s there the Naschmarkt and the flea market
are contributing additionally towards the liveliness. In the surrounding
roads Beisls (Beisls = small restaurants) line up with
Theatres, Cafes and Taverns. The Spittelbergviertel lies
in the 7th District of Vienna and was part of a renovation process
where old houses were restored and converted into fashion shops,
restaurants, theatres and Art-Galleries. In Josefstadt,
the 8th District of Vienna once lived a lot of officials. The Josefstadt
theatre, one of the oldest theatres of the city (built in 1788),
is still running. Alsergrund is the 9th and often named
the academic District of the city is where you can find Siegmund
Freud’s House which today is a museum. A further museum in
that quarter is Liechtenstein Museum located
in the Palais Liechtenstein which also holds Vienna’s Museum
of Modern Art.
